How do you build trust in new models of teaching and learning?
How do you maintain a strategic, mission-aligned focus while operating outside the traditional school structure?
How can accreditation support organizations that deliver high-quality education in unconventional ways?
In 1996, VHS Learning had a vision for creating online access to specialized courses most schools could not afford to run, but they faced strong skepticism. Questions about quality and credibility abounded.
That’s when they turned to Middle States.
Today, VHS Learning serves over 16,000 students annually. They offer more than 250 high school courses—including 29 Advanced Placement titles—through a paced, asynchronous model that combines flexibility with rigor and meaningful interaction.
Middle States helped VHS become an accredited Learning Service Provider (LSP). LSPs represent a growing number of non-traditional educational organizations committed to quality, innovation, and continuous improvement. The VHS journey offers valuable takeaways for schools navigating partnerships and program expansion:
1 | Accreditation Builds Trust in Innovation
For VHS Learning, Middle States accreditation provided essential external validation.
“Schools needed assurance our program was structured and beneficial,” says Amy Michalowski, Dean of VHS Learning. “Accreditation provided exactly that.”
A trusted credential differentiated VHS Learning from less-structured online options and gave schools—and their enrolled families—confidence in VHS courses.
2 | Accreditation as Collaboration, Not Compliance
Middle States recognized that VHS Learning didn’t fit into a traditional mold, so we tailored the accreditation process to emphasize understanding, thoughtful inquiry, and improvement.
“Middle States never tried to fit us into a traditional school model,” Amy shared. “They asked questions that helped us strengthen our unique structure and vision.”
3 | Accreditation Anchors Strategic Planning
For VHS Learning, accreditation wasn’t a one-time milestone - it’s a strategic compass.
“When we set our annual goals, we revisit our accreditation objectives,” Amy notes. “It helps keep us focused on thoughtful, long-term improvements rather than reactive short-term moves.”
Why This Matters to You
You may be partnering with organizations that provide online, blended, or otherwise non-traditional learning experiences. VHS Learning’s story highlights how Middle States accreditation can extend beyond schools to include these innovative partners—ensuring they meet the same standards of quality, trust, and continuous improvement that you expect for your own institution.
